Mariah Carey tells rapper YTK to ‘respond to my lawyers’ after sampling her hit Shake It Off

Mariah Carey decided to a respond to an amateur rapper begging for her attention, but he may not have received the comment he was hoping for.

The veteran pop crooner took to Twitter to share her disdain for Baltimore rapper YTK, who released a track called Let It Off on Friday which samples her 2005 hit single Shake It Off.

A clip of the accompanying video went viral on the social media platform after RNB Radar CEO Tommy Banks posted it with the caption: ‘Mariah Carey has 24 hours to respond.’

And respond she did. On Saturday morning, she Tweeted: ‘How about y’all have 24 hours to respond to my lawyers.’

She paired the shady message with a purple heart emoji and a GIF of her from her 2018 music video for GTFO, showing the star mouthing the words to the explicit title.

The Tweet came after a mini viral campaign developed to turn the remix into a legally-cleared song.

As a mother, Mariah may not have been too fond of the new track’s message, which swaps the title as a reference for letting off rounds of gunfire.

The feedback isn’t terribly surprising considering it uses the exact same beat as the lead single to Carey’s 10th studio album The Emancipation of Mimi.

YTK also mimics the influential artist’s cadence on his version of the track, doing it without any official clearance.

In the video, he dons a white ski mask and waves around a gun as he performs the expletive-laden hook: ‘I’m bout to let it off, B****, I’m posted with the gang, Then I hear you say my name, Before my n***** blow your brain.’

The song continues: ‘I’m bout to let it off, Don’t make a n**** hurt you like, You gotta live gotta run ahead and gotta go somewhere, I’m bout to let it off, If it ain’t got my tool, I know n***** who, Will blow your brain for the f*** of it babe, I’m bout to let it off, I don’t need this press for me, Shawty and that mean I gotta let it off.’

Rip off? The feedback isn't terribly surprising considering it uses the exact same beat as the lead single to Carey's 10th studio album The Emancipation of Mimi

Fans online were quick to respond, with one expressing support for Mariah, Tweeting: ‘its HER MUSIC. at the end of the day she has complete control over what she clears and doesnt; this is her life’s work and if she doesn’t want someone to use, she doesn’t have to let them.’

Another spoke out on YTK’s side, writing: ‘Support black business? Idk ik it’s your song ma’am but you can’t let them have some fun? It was a lil bop.’

But according to Banks, all is well and Mariah’s message was meant in good fun.

‘hey I want to reiterate that Mariah was joking, please stop saying rude s*** to her,’ he later Tweeted.

He also explained that she ‘put us in contact with the people who can help us clear it! so it’s not a problem on her end,’ seemingly implying that the issue actually lies with the record label.

RNB Radar’s attempt to create a viral sensation with the song clearly worked.

‘In 24 hours: I was able to get YTK 5 million impressions Almost 1 million views 100’s of celebrities retweeting it and Mariah herself responded,’ Banks also Tweeted.

The Distance songstress sent a playful reaction to one fan, putting the motives of her message even more in question.

‘What I love about Mariah Carey is I have no idea she’s either teasing or she’s serious here,’ read the Tweet, with the star responding: ‘I don’t know and neither do you!’

This latest controversy came days after Carey received her second Covid-19 vaccine shot.

She posted a video of it on her Instagram page, assuring fans she was actually getting the jab by pointing out how terrible the lighting was in the doctor’s office.

Clad in grey leggings, a black and gold Versace t-shirt, black mask and face shield sunglasses, the Fantasy hitmaker responded to those who have doubts about the vaccine and whether or not she really got it.

‘We don’t care what they think. By the way, people were like, “oh, it’s the fake needle”,’ she said in the clip.

She then asked her camera person to pan up to the room’s fluorescent ceiling lights as she joked: ‘Would I ever go into this lighting for no reason? No!’
