American Idol is coming back for its 20th season in 2022… as ‘Katy Perry is expected to return’

American Idol is coming back for its 20th season in 2022, which will also mark the hit show’s 20th anniversary. 

Idol’s home network ABC announced its renewal on Thursday with America’s Funniest Home Videos and Shark Tank also set to return for the 2021-2022 season.   

Longtime host Ryan Seacrest, 46, and judges Katy Perry, 36, Luke Bryan, 44, and Lionel Richie, 71, have not yet closed deals to resume their roles, however sources told The Hollywood Reporter that they are all expected to return.

Seacrest initially shared hosting duties with comedian Brian Dunkleman during the first season. After Dunkleman quit, Seacrest became the sole host of the show, a position that he has held since the second season.

Idol is produced by Fremantle and Industrial Media’s 19 Entertainment with Trish Kinane, Jennifer Mullin, Megan Wolflick, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman serving as executive producers.

Originally airing on Fox, the singing competition debuted in 2002 and became one of the biggest hits of the summer. The series was created by Simon Fuller and its original three judges were Simon Cowell, 61, Paula Abdul, 58, and Randy Jackson, 64.

By 2004, Idol had become the most watched show on US television, a spot it held for a record-breaking eight consecutive years. 

Idol launched the careers of many major stars including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks among others.  

However, it was canceled by Fox in 2016 due to a sharp decrease in ratings. ABC picked up the rights to Idol in 2017 with the show returning for the 2017-2018 season.

America’s Funniest Home Videos and Shark Tank are two of ABC’s longest running unscripted series with 32 seasons and 13 seasons respectively. 

The network is also bringing back newcomers Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Supermarket Sweep. 

It had already renewed Dancing With the Stars, The Bachelorette and Holey Moley for the upcoming season.
