Miley Cyrus touches on her relationship with Liam Hemsworth as she talks anniversary of song Malibu

Miley Cyrus‘ song Malibu turned four on Tuesday May 11 and conjured up some memories of her relationship with ex-love Liam Hemsworth in the process.

The 28-year-old Plastic Hearts crooner penned a heartfelt message on Instagram while reflecting on the ballad which she said was an ode to ‘a place and person that at the time [she] loved very much.’ 

The pair’s decade long relationship was marked by many ups and downs including a broken proposal, a reconciliation, and ultimately marriage before they called it quits in 2019. 

Miley shared a video of herself first recording the song at her home studio in 2017 as she belted out various notes while wearing a graphic sweatshirt. 

The stripped back song was the lead single off her album Younger Now and the video featured her frolicking around various scenic locations in the upscale beach town.

‘Today is the 4 year anniversary of Malibu. A song about a place and person that at the time I loved very much,’ she began her caption. 

‘That love was reciprocated beyond what I could describe here with freedom & escapism. I lost that home along with many others in 2018. Here is a video of me writing it in my home studio.’  

The pair first began dating in 2009 after meeting on the set of The Last Song and he eventually proposed in 2012, before they broke things off in 2013. The couple reconciled in 2015 before they tied the knot in 2018. 

She and The Hunger Games actor, 31, lost their Malibu home shortly before they wed to the Woolsey Fires which destroyed over 1,600 homes including that of Gerard Butler, Robin Thicke and former Real Housewife of Beverly Hills Camille Grammer.  

At the time Liam had called it a ‘heartbreaking few days,’ sharing a photo of the remnants of their home with a singed sign that read ‘Love,’ ironically enough.  

And Miley shared on Twitter that though she was devastated by the loss she was ‘one of the lucky ones,’ while calling Liam the ‘love of her life.’  

‘I am one of the lucky ones. My animals and LOVE OF MY LIFE made it out safely & that’s all that matters right now. My house no longer stands but the memories shared with family & friends stand strong,’ she wrote before thanking the first aid responders. 

After the couple’s split she confessed to Rolling Stone in December 2020 that the fire actually prompted the two to get married, in what she called ‘one last attempt to save myself.’ 

‘In a way, it did what I couldn’t do for myself. It removed me from what no longer was serving its purpose. And then as you drown, you reach for that lifesaver and you want to save yourself. I think that’s really what, ultimately, getting married was for me. One last attempt to save myself,’ she shared. 

And she continued to say that in the years since the relationship’s end she has gained a ‘healthy perspective,’ on life and love. 

‘I learned a lot about what I can and cannot be for someone else and what I can and cannot accept for myself,’ she said. 

Cyrus — who performed on Saturday Night Live over the weekend — has enjoyed a string of relationships with both men and women including Brody Jenner’s ex-wife Kaitlynn Carter and Cody Simpson.
