‘I’d say: “Why would you go back to looking at that black line?”

‘Look at all you’ve done, all you’ve achieved, you’ve been on Broadway, you’ve done this, you’ve done that and you want to swap it for that solitude, for that hard-core work you’ll have to put in, the hours up and down the pool?”‘

Cody then made his case to his mum and explained that he had unfinished business in the pool.

‘Mum, it’s just this burning desire that’s never gone away, to see what I can do with it,’ he told Angie, according to her.

‘It’s about seeing something through that I never finished, and it’s about having a crack. I want to give it a red hot go, and if it goes nowhere, fair enough, but if I don’t do it now I’ll never do it,’ Cody continued.

‘I’ll always have music, but there’s a limited time for swimming and I just want to be able to, win or lose, look back one day and say, well, at least I gave it my best shot.’

Last month, Cody placed ninth in his heat at the Australian National Championships, with a time of 24.79 seconds.

Speaking to Newscorp at the time, he said he was ‘dusting himself off’ following the defeat.

He claimed his two weeks in quarantine could have contributed to a loss in his optimal pool performance.

‘I probably would have liked to have gone a little quicker, but it was the first race back in a long time and I’ve only just come out of quarantine,’ he said.

Cody continued: ‘Two weeks out of the water sets you back quite a while, but I had to get through the quarantine at some point.’

‘I just wanted to get up and at least do the 50m to dust myself off.’

Before returning to swimming, Cody was best known for his music career and his string of famous girlfriends, which include Miley Cyrus.

His pop career peaked in the early 2010s when he cracked the charts with singles like ‘iYiYi’ and ‘On My Mind’.
