‘I’ve decided to live a bit longer’: Michael Caine, 88, gives up alcohol to have more time with his three grandchildren

Michael Caine has revealed he has given up alcohol so he can have as much time with his three grandchildren as he can.

The actor, 88, said being a grandfather has given ‘me a new lease of life’, and he is ‘completely besotted’ with twins Miles and Allegra and grandson Taylor.

Back in 2017, Michael lost a staggering two stone and cut back on drinking amid fears that he could have developed cancer.

Now, the Batman star has revealed he has become tee-total and spoke about how his grandchildren are the highlight of his life.

In an interview with Candis magazine, Michael said: ‘I’ve decided to live a bit longer, I’ve cut down on the drink and got a new outlook on life. I thought I wasn’t going to have grandchildren, and suddenly I have three.

‘They’re my fountain of youth and have given me a new lease of life without any of the worries or troubles. I’m completely besotted and so is my wife.

‘I’ve had some high points in my life, I’ve won two Academy Awards and been given a knighthood, and I used to think that you couldn’t get better than that but then I got my grandchildren, which is better than anything.’

Michael has two daughters; Dominique, 65, from his first marriage to actress Patricia Haines – and Natasha, 48, from his second, Shakira Baksh.

The actor went on to say, despite his legendary 60-year career in the film industry, being a father is his greatest achievement.

Michael said he loves spending time with his two girls and ‘tends to spoil them’.

The Hollywood thespian previously spoke about how he used to have ‘one bottle of vodka a day’ during his early career and how his wife Shakira, 74, ‘calmed him down’ after they married in 1973.

He told the Radio Times in 2016: ‘Without her I would have been dead long ago. I would have probably drunk myself to death.

‘I was a bit of a p**s artist when I was younger, I used to drink a bottle of vodka a day and I was smoking too, several packs a day.

‘I wasn’t unhappy but it was stress. You know, “Am I going to get another picture? How am I going to do this part? How am I going to remember all those lines? I’ve got to get up at 6 in the morning and I hope the alarm works”.’
