David Campbell scoffs at petition for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to be stripped of royal titles

He has made no secret of his allegiance to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex amid their rift with the British Royal Family.

And Today Extra host David Campbell championed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle yet again on Wednesday as he weighed in on a petition urging the Sussexes to voluntarily give up their royal titles.

The left-leaning journalist, 47, who recently hailed Prince Harry as a ‘hero’ for sharing his mental health battles, rolled his eyes and scoffed while discussing the petition.

‘Here we go again!’ Today Extra host David Campbell (left, with Belinda Russell) showed his allegiance to the Sussexes yet again on Wednesday, as he weighed in on a new petition urging Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to voluntarily give up their royal titles

‘It’s gained more than 45,000 signatures. It’s burning up! The move is being led by socialite Lady Colin Campbell… and says the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should stop damaging the institution of the monarchy,’ he said.

‘Here we go again,’ he added with a cynical smirk.

Campbell also couldn’t help but take a swipe at one of the Sussexes’ most vocal adversaries, Piers Morgan, saying the only reason why the petition had gained so many signatures was because Morgan had signed it ’40 times’.

Campbell is known for his progressive politics, which are often at odds with the views expressed elsewhere on the Nine Network.

Two weeks ago, he defended the Sussexes on air by hitting back at a Nine reporter who dared to suggest Prince Harry was ‘whingeing’ about his privileged upbringing.

9Honey reporter Natalie Oliveri said: ‘It’s a shame that Prince Harry’s whingeing really has clouded a lot of this documentary, this podcast.’

The former musical theatre performer immediately bristled at this remark.

‘Is he whingeing?’ Campbell said, to which Ms Oliveri replied: ‘People are saying that he’s whingeing and that’s why people are now calling [for him to drop his title].’

‘He’s telling his story. I don’t see that as whingeing,’ Campbell responded.

Ms Oliveri stood her ground, saying: ‘Well, people are now calling for his title to be stripped. If you’re going to complain about “living in a zoo” and being “trapped” in the monarchy, well therefore give back your titles. That’s what people are saying.’

The host then swiftly wrapped up the segment.

Campbell also hailed Harry as a ‘hero’ last month, following his interview with the Armchair Expert podcast, during which he accused his father, Prince Charles, of subjecting him to ‘genetic pain’.

The Today Extra presenter declared he was proudly ‘pro-Harry’ because the Duke’s recent public statements had sparked a global discussion about mental health.

He even said Harry was the only member of the Royal Family he liked.

He began his defence of the Sussexes by hitting back at the suggestion Harry isn’t allowed to speak about his unhappiness because of his privileged upbringing.

‘He can’t choose this! He’s not going to go live in a block of flats in Eastgardens,’ he said.

As the conversation shifted to Harry’s rift with his father and his brother, Prince William, Campbell said it’s ‘not on him’ to repair those relationships – suggesting the Royal Family should be apologising and trying to make amends.

As he wrapped up the segment later on, Campbell gushed: ‘I think Harry’s a good thing. I don’t know about the other royals. Harry’s amazing.’

He couldn’t even bring himself to say the name of the Duke’s most vocal critic, former Good Morning Britain host and DailyMail.com columnist Piers Morgan.

‘Were we ever not pro-Harry?’ asked his co-host Belinda Russell.

‘No there’s people out there like Piers…’ Campbell said, before stopping himself and shaking his head in disapproval.

‘There are people out there,’ he added.
