Cruella debuted in cinemas and on Disney+ on May 28, earning a staggering $48.5 million at the global box office.

And now it’s understood Disney are working on a sequel for the film, which currently stars Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil and Emma Thompson as Baroness von Hellman.

The Hollywood Reporter claimed on Friday that the sequel is ‘in early development’ and will see director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara return.

‘We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,’ a Disney spokesperson told the outlet.

‘The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action re-imaginings.’

While a sequel was not entirely confirmed, the spokesperson went on to say that they ‘look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.’

MailOnline has reached out to Disney for confirmation of a sequel.

Cruella centres on how Estella became the ruthless villain Cruella, and alongside Stone and Thompson, also stars Mark Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Fry and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

Stone, 32, admitted on UK television show Lorraine last month that she felt a ‘great amount of pressure’ taking over the role of Disney villain Cruella, following Glenn Close’s iconic performance in 101 Dalmatians.

When asked by interviewer Mark Heyes if she felt intimated taking over the role for Glenn, 74, she replied: ‘At first I felt a great amount of pressure, but then I remembered when I played Sally in Cabaret in 2014, and that was one of the most scary moments because the list of actresses who have played that role is insane.

‘I have to create an entirely new character and obviously it won’t even touch what she did, I mean of course she’s Glenn Close.’

Elsewhere during the interview, Stone said she had ‘so much fun’ playing her evil character.

‘Can you imagine if that wasn’t fun to play? I mean just the opportunity to really dig into the darkest, darkest parts is really cool,’ she said.
