King Willem-Alexander delighted Dutch football fans today as he joined them for pre-match celebrations at the Marktweg district in the Hague today.

The royal, 54, and Mayor Jan van Zanen of The Hague were shown around by brothers Danny and Raymond Zwennes, who were responsible for initiating the decorating of the Marktweg. 

The area won the prize for ‘The Most Beautiful Orange Street in the Netherlands’ following a campaign to deck out streets for the European Football Championships.

King Willem-Alexander looked polished in a classic white shirt and black trousers, and added a vibrant patriotic orange scarf to embrace the theme.

King Willem, whose wife Maxima was not present, posed with football supporters ahead of the European Championship match this evening in which the Netherlands took on Austria.

During the royal visit Danny and Raymond explained that they have been taking care of the street decoration at all European and World Championships for 30 years.

The brothers said they visit the local residents for consultation and financial contribution, in addition to speaking to the local tradesmen to sponsor the decorations.   

The impressive finished results of the decorated street is a joint effort by the neighbourhood.

King Willem has had a busy day, having also attended the opening of an exhibition at the Amsterdam Museum

King Willem finished his visit by entering the garden of a house on Marktweg, where residents can watch the matches during the European Championship.  

The Dutch royal has had a busy day having also opened an exhibition – ‘The Golden Coach’- in the Amsterdam Museum.

The visit began with him receiving the first copy of the book De Gouden Koets, followed by a guided tour from the director of the Amsterdam Museum, Judikje Kier.

Meanwhile, Queen Maxima took part in a virtual talk with government representatives of Côte d’Ivoire.

The couple have three daughters – Princess Catharina-Amalia, 17, Princess Alexia, 15, and Princess Ariane, 14.
