The Shrink Next Door trailer explores bizarre psychiatrist-patient relationship in dark comedy

Will Ferrell gets into Paul Rudd’s head in the upcoming dark comedy series The Shrink Next Door on Apple TV+.

The first trailer, released Thursday, shows a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morph into an unusual and exploitative relationship.

Based on a true story that was turned into the 2019 Wondery podcast of the same name, Ferrell portrays stressed-out patient Martin ‘Marty’ Markowitz, while Rudd is the seemingly good-natured psychiatrist Dr. Isaac ‘Ike’ Herschkopf.

Teaser: The first trailer for the dark comedy series The Shrink Next Door dropped on Thursday

‘Everything is fine,’ Marty repeatedly declares to his shrink over and over, while his body language, tone of voice, and overall life, say otherwise.

Fed up with being placated, Ike assesses Marty and gives him the cold hard truth: ‘everything is not fine.’

‘You know what word I’m getting a little tired of hearing fro you Marty? The f-word,’ Ike scolds his patient during one of their therapy sessions.

The teaser proceeds to show their doctor-patient relationship go beyond the walls of the doctor’s office and expand out to spending leisurely time together in their personal lives.

And it doesn’t take long before the all-too-charming Ike slowly takes over Marty’s life, even moving into his Hamptons home and taking over his family business, according to Deadline.

‘Your doctor’s a little unconventional,’ Marty’s sister, Phyllis Markowitz (Kathryn Hahn), says to him over clips of the two fraternizing together as the relationship becomes filled with manipulation, power grabs, and dysfunction.

Upon hearing Marty confess that he trusts Ike ‘completely’, the doctor takes time out of a session to announce: ‘I do believe you have just had what we headshrinkers call a breakthrough.’
