Man United’s Rio Ferdinand pokes fun at teammate Wayne Rooney after son Kai appears in City shirt

His father is Manchester United’s highest ever goal scorer.

But that didn’t stop Kai Rooney, 11, sporting a Manchester City top in a new photo uploaded by his proud mother Coleen on Instagram.

The 35-year-old shared the sweet image of Kai on Monday as he sat grinning for the camera in the blue Manchester City top, sparking a comment of faux outrage from Wayne’s former teammate and fellow United legend Rio Ferdinand.

‘What’s he doing?’ Rio Ferdinand poked fun at his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney on Monday, after his son Kai, 11, appeared in a snap sporting a City shirt

Coleen left a simple caption of a love heart on the picture, but Kai’s choice of top did not go unnoticed.

His father Wayne’s former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand spotted the City top and was quick to question it.

Responding to the picture of Kai, Rio, who played for United from 2002 to 2014 before retiring the following year, said: ‘What’s he doing in that top????’

The rivalry between Manchester’s two biggest clubs is one of the most historic in football, with their twice-annual Derby matches a fixture in fans’ calendar.

It also comes just months after Kai signed onto the Red Devils’ youth academy in December.

Sharing a post at the time, Coleen uploaded a snap of herself and her sportsman husband, 35, posing with Kai as he signed his new contract.

Captioning images of the momentous occasion, she wrote: ‘Special night….. congratulations Kai. I love you and I am so proud of you. Keep trying your best ❤️’.

In the main image, Kai was seen sporting a grey team top as he sat at a table holding a pen to pages of his contract while flanked by his beaming parents.

Wayne also shared the same snaps on his Instagram account, adding the caption: ”Proud day. Kai signing for @manchesterunited. Keep up the hard work son.’

Former England striker Wayne joined Manchester United from Everton in 2004.

He had a glittering 13-year career at Old Trafford, scoring 253 times in 559 appearances and breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing goal record in 2017.

During his remarkable career at Old Trafford, Wayne won five Premier League titles, three League Cups, one FA Cup, one Europa League and one Champions League.

Wayne left for boyhood club Everton in 2017 before joining MLS outfit DC United prior to moving to Derby.

The former England and United captain is still adored by the United faithful thanks to his incredible service to the club during their glory years under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The picture of Kai in a Manchester City top comes after Coleen marked her and husband Wayne’s thirteenth wedding anniversary on Sunday with a sweet Instagram snap, revealing they had celebrated the day with a family day out in London.

Sharing a photo of the pair standing outside London’s Southbank Centre in the sunshine, Coleen captioned her post: ’13 years married! Happy Anniversary @waynerooney.’

In a photo shared by Wayne, the couple beamed while posing with their four sons – Kai, Klay, eight, Kit, five, and Cass, three – revealing their boys were included in the anniversary fun.

Childhood sweethearts Wayne and Coleen met at school when they were 12, before they started dating after they finished school at 16.

They tied the knot in a romantic ceremony in Italy, with wedding said to have cost an estimated £5m.

After both a civil and church ceremony – and three dress changes for Coleen – the newlyweds celebrated at the Villa Durazzo, for a champagne reception, which continued on until 4am.

A live band played a medley of Frank Sinatra songs and enjoyed a £50,000 firework display. True to form, the couple reportedly decided against sophisticated fare, opting for a sit-down meal of pizza.
