Jensen and Danneel Ackles working on a prequel to Supernatural for The CW titled The Winchesters

Supernatural stars Jensen and Danneel Ackles are working on a prequel of The CW show titled The Winchesters.

Jensen will narrate the show in character as Dean Winchester, Deadline reported, which will focus on the parents of Dean and Sam Winchester, John and Mary.

The show will detail how the couple came together and the risks they took in their relationship – with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

The series has a script commitment and is in development with The CW, according to the outlet, and Robbie Thompson will executive produce the series.

Jensen and Danneel Ackles are set to executive produce with their new company Chaos Machine Productions.

Jensen, speaking with the outlet, said that it was a foregone conclusion the Supernatural story would continue after the initial series wrapped up late last year after a record 15 seasons (in the sci-fi/genre) on the air.

‘After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over,’ he told Deadline. ‘Because like we say in the show, “Nothing ever really ends, does it?”

‘When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.’

Supernatural featured Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Dean and Sam Winchester, the children of John and Mary, who were portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith on the initial series.

Outside of the Supernatural franchise, Padalecki has been seen on The CW show Walker, while Jensen is set to join the cast of The Boys, an Amazon show.
