Alastair Campbell plays the BAGPIPES during his return to Good Morning Britain

Alastair Campbell made his return to Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning, where he joined co-host Susanna Reid at the helm of the daytime show.

And the presenter, 64, got off to an eventful start as he played the bagpipes live on air to the tune of ‘It’s Coming Home’, in support of the England squad’s semi-final Euro 2020 clash against Denmark.

However, Tony Blair’s former right hand man’s attempt at musical entertainment didn’t go down too well with some viewers as he had some reaching for the remote, with one tweeting they ‘had to turn over’.

Alastair had joined Susanna, 50, on the show after taking over from Richard Madeley, who co-hosted earlier in the week, with the star hosting until Friday. He previously hosted in May.

And it wasn’t long before football fever swept the ITV studio, with Alastair keen to show his support for the home team as well as show off his talent.

As the rest of the GMB cast and production crew stood and watched, with Dr Hilary Jones covering his ears, the former strategist proudly played on.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer shared: ‘#gmb has gone down the pan having Alastair Campbell on and now having him play the bagpipes badly! Had to turn over.’

While another moaned: ‘I feel like we’ve been duped with that bagpipe version of “it’s coming home”…Alastair is definitely having a laugh at us here in #GMB Come on England!’

‘I never watch #GMB and switching on to see Alastair Campbell playing the bagpipes confirms why’ shared a third viewer’

‘Someone get those bagpipes and throw them in the Thames for f**k sake’ fumed a fourth disgruntled person.

With another adding: ‘Turn on GMB, see Alister Campbell playing bagpipes, see him say footballs not coming home. Turn tv off.’

However, some viewers appreciated Alastair’s efforts, with one writing: ‘Amazed to see Alastair Campbell playing the bagpipes – impressive.’

As another shared: ‘Absolutely loving @campbellclaret playing bagpipes on #GMB (altho I did wonder if the queen died for a minute). More wholesome content like this and less Harry and Meghan bashing would be ideal in the mornings.’

Elsewhere on the show, Alastair suffered an awkward moment as he was accidentally called the wrong name by a guest.

Appearing video video link, guest Darren Lewis was on to discuss England’s Semi-final match against Denmark, when he accidentally called Alastair Andrew – no doubt confusing him with Andrew Pierce who was also in the studio.

Referring to something Alastair said earlier, Darren said: ‘I love the fact that, Andrew, you’ve done your homework – the numbers are in our favour…’

At which the camera then panned to a baffled looking Andrew, who mouthed to Susanna: ‘I didn’t say that’.

He then joked: ‘You’re going to sue over that’, while a miffed Alastair exclaimed repeatedly: ‘Did he call me Andrew?’

As Darren giggled awkwardly, the presenter swiftly moved on the conversation.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays from 6am on ITV.
