During the opening minutes of the show, Ruth joined the nation in expressing her heartbreak at England losing to Italy in the Euros final.

She said: ‘Gutted, I had my football shirt on. So many of us have been really engaged with this team, I absolutely thought it was going to be 2-1.

‘Penalties are brutal for everyone. I’m so gutted for them, however, very proud.’

Asked if he was looking foward to working with his wife again for the summer, Eamonn said: ‘Well it’s the only time we really get to see each other properly, so yes!

‘We both have very busy lives so it’s actually quite an unusual thing to spend so much time together. So yes, that’s got to be a good thing!’

Ruth added: ‘We’ve hosted so many This Morning summers now and we always look forward to it. They are always a lot of fun the summer weeks, it has a slightly different vibe to it than the rest of the year.

‘People are often tuning in on their own holidays so we look forward to hearing where people are and they send us messages about what they are doing for the summer. We’ve been doing this since Jack was really little.’

Eamon also spoke of his excitement at becoming a granddad with his son Declan and his partner Jenny expecting their first child together.

He said: ‘I’ll not need to buy any Manchester United baby grows, that’s a prerequisite – Jenny knew when she married into the family that would be expected!

‘It’s still just so strange to think that my wee baby will be having a baby and that Declan is going to be a dad. It’ll be really emotional, and they will be a very loving mother and father… as long as they know you’re there for them.

‘You can only wish for health and happiness and it’s a lovely landmark in the family… and for me to be a grandfather for the first time.

‘Have they asked for any parenting tips? No, I think every generation that has children knows better than the previous generation.’

The couple recently celebrated 25 years together, including 11 years of marriage, with Ruth saying ‘respect’ has been the key to their success.

She said: ‘We always laugh at the term ‘Couple Goals’, it’s such a modern expression! But 25 years is a long time to be together and I think working together as well – not many people work with their partner as well – so I think a lot of respect comes into it.

‘I think you have to respect each other as people and we respect each other as broadcasters. And as much as people sometimes say, “Oh they argue”, I would say, ‘No we don’t, we have differences of opinion’ and I think that’s healthy!

‘People will always see that we laugh a lot too…’

Eamonn added: ‘I agree. There’s a huge amount of understanding and tolerance and a good dollop of humour that keeps you going.’

Ruth previously announced she would be stepping back from her Loose Women role for the time being to focus on hosting the magazine show with Eamonn.

During a June episode of Loose Women, Ruth received a send-off from her co-hosts before heading ‘next-door’ to work on This Morning, which is filmed in the next studio at the BBC Television Centre in west London.

Ruth told her co-stars: ‘I’m not leaving – normally when you do a best bits everyone goes: ‘Thank you, it’s been lovely working with you.’

‘I’m going next door. Eamonn and I will be on This Morning for about six weeks then I will be back.

‘But I’ll be talking to you all every day because we do the handovers.’

The pair previously presented the programme every Friday, but were replaced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary in January.

Ruth revealed they would be returning to the brunch-time show over the summer holidays, telling OK! magazine: ‘We’ll be doing seven weeks from July. I’m looking forward to it.’

Eamonn and Ruth have filled in for main hosts Phillip and Holly since their departure, but they didn’t appear on the show during the recent half-term.

The pair co-hosted the show in April, and Eamonn took the opportunity to tell viewers he is going to be a grandfather for the first time.

The veteran presenter said: ‘Declan is my eldest boy, he’s 32, and Jenny is his beloved wife. They have just announced that I, together with Valerie and Robin, Jenny’s mum and dad, and Gabrielle, Declan’s mummy, we’re all going to be grandparents.

‘It’s very good. We’re very happy’.

Ruth, who is Declan’s step-mother, added: ‘Declan and Jenny – we’re so, so happy for you. Lots of love to you.’

She sweetly added: ‘They’re going to be the most wonderful parents.’

It was revealed on November 30 that Ruth and Eamonn had been cut from their weekly Friday slot to be replaced with Alison and Dermot.

The two stars both sent out an identical statement which read: ‘It’s a changing of the guard on Fridays from January. We hope you make Alison and Dermot as welcome as you’ve made us over the years.

‘Have a Ball you two!… ‘It’s not Goodbye from us, it’s simply Au Revoir until the next half term.’

Breaking her silence on the shake-up following weeks of speculation, Alison, said in a statement: ‘I never dreamt that when I first joined This Morning – initially for a few months – that I would still be there 19 years later.

‘I genuinely care about the show and the viewers who watch, so it’s a huge privilege and honour to be hosting a show I adore so much. I’m just really excited to be doing even more of what I love alongside the lovely Dermot.’

Sharing his own statement, co-host Dermot said: ‘I’m deeply thrilled and honoured to be joining the This Morning team next year. We have huge shoes to fill and we are well aware what a privilege it is to be stepping into them.

‘Above all, we want to have fun and for you to be able to kick your weekend off with a smile, especially given the year we’ve all had.

‘So I’m delighted to be co-hosting with the living embodiment of sunshine on a rainy day. I can’t wait to get started.’
