Anna Kendrick to lead psychological thriller about a girls trip gone horribly wrong in Alice, Darling

Anna Kendrick has signed on to play the lead role in the psychological thriller, Alice, Darling.

The film is already in production in Canada, and it marks the directorial debut of Mary Nighy, who’s the daughter of British actors Bill Nighy and Diana Quick. 

Kendrick plays Alice, a woman who’s behaving strangely and keeping secrets about her volatile boyfriend (Charlie Carrick) from her two best friends (Wunmi Mosaku and Kaniehtiio Horn).

In the film, the Oscar-nominated actress and her friends embark on a girls trip that goes wrong when a local girl goes missing and Alice’s mercurial boyfriend arrives unannounced, according to Deadline

The screenplay was written by Alanna Francis, who previously wrote the drama film The Rest Of Us (2019), starring Heather Graham, Sophie Nélisse, Abigail Pniowsky, and Jodi Balfour, among others.

It was praised by The Hollywood Reporter’s Sheri Linden as ‘sharply written and sensitively played.

‘Alice, Darling is a subtle, nuanced story about coercion and control,’ Nighy said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

‘As a director, I couldn’t wish for a better cast of talented actors and creatives to bring this important story to life. The chemistry between Anna Kendrick, Wunmi Mosaku, and Kaniehtiio Horn as the three friends is a joy to see.’

Alice, Darling is being produced by Katie Bird Nolan, Lindsay Tapscott, Christina Piovesan, and Noah Segal, while Kendrick and Sam Tipper-Hale are serving as executive producers.  

This is Kendrick’s second project with Lionsgate, after having previously starred alongside Blake Lively and Henry Golding in the Paul Feig’s A Simple Favor (2018).  

Praised by critics, in part, for its plot twists and performances of Kendrick, Lively and Golding, the film went on to gross more than $97 million worldwide on a $20 million budget.           

Kendrick, 35, made her film debut in musical-comedy drama Camp (2003). 

She has since garnered worldwide recognition for he roles in the Twilight franchise (2008-2012), Up In The Air (2009), which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award For Best Supporting Actress, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), End Of Watch (2012), The Pitch Perfect franchise (2012-2017), Into The Woods (2014), Cake (2014), Trolls (2016), and A Simple Favor (2018).
