Celebrity IOU: Gwyneth Paltrow does demolition work in style to help transform assistant’s condo

Gwyneth Paltrow wore double denim for demolition work on Monday’s episode of Celebrity IOU on HGTV.

The 48-year-old actress enlisted Jonathan and Drew Scott, both 43, to transform a West Hollywood condo for her assistant Kevin.

She revealed to the twin brothers that Kevin has been her assistant for the past 11 years and she considered him family and wanted to help him redesign his home, which was clearly in need of work.

Kevin, she said, never owned a home before and had been saving up for a ‘really long time”.

‘This is his forever home,’ Gwyneth said. ‘He has been an incredible constant in my life. I trust him with everything. He’s my right hand man. He knows where all the bodies are buried.’

She said that Kevin was such a good person and started to cry when she thought about being able to do something for him.

‘At some point, we formed something that seems really deeper than colleagues,’ Gwyneth said. ‘It really feels like family.’

Gwyneth said she went house hunting with Kevin and helped him find this place.

‘I don’t fancy myself as an expert,’ Gwyneth said. ‘I think I have good taste. Although I think everyone thinks that I have good taste.’

Kevin had gone away for four weeks so that gave Gwyneth and the Property Brothers time to transform that space.

Gwyneth told them she had already put a lot of thought into how to redo the condo.

‘Spatially it is a little awkward so it needs a master plan that will make it work as a whole,’ she said of Kevin’s condo layout.

The next day Gwyneth, wearing a denim outfit, showed up to help do the demolition work and tried to help out where she could.

‘I’m so not a bad ass,’ she said later to the camera. ‘I think I humiliated myself.’

She added that it felt good to break walls and cabinets. ‘Once you kind of get into it, it felt pretty good.’

Gwyneth quipped that her superpower in the next Avengers movie would be removing sinks.

Both Drew and Jonathan were impressed with Gwyneth’s renovation and demolition skills.

She also used her style skills to help pick out tile designs for Kevin, but admitted she wasn’t crazy about the tile options.

‘I asked politely if we could see a few more options,’ she said later to the camera. ‘I think we will get somewhere really good.’

Gwyneth even showed up to help hang cabinets and to plaster the walls.

‘This is the first time I have been this hands on, ever,’ she said to the camera. ‘And I love it. It’s nice to put your physical work into something and to have that dharma on the wall and in the cabinets. It’s pretty cool.’

When it came to putting the tile down the bathroom, Gwyneth told Jonathan she didn’t ‘love it.’

‘I had to throw a little flag on the play,’ she said later to the camera when she asked him to change the tile after installing a few.

‘I’m not mad,’ he told her.

She also helped out painting the window trim black in a white linen jumpsuit.

‘You know when Gwyneth is all in when she is wearing the fanciest jumpsuit I’ve ever seen and she is willing to get it dirty,’ said Drew.

‘It’s her construction jumpsuit,’ said Jonathan.

Jonathan asked her what she found more enjoyable, learning lines or painting doors.

‘Painting doors,’ she said.

To put the finishing touches on the black and white designed condo, Gwyneth wore a black sleeveless dress with white shoulder straps and a white bow in the back.

When she brought Kevin back to his house, he was shocked by the transformation and they hugged.

‘The place blows my mind,’ he said.

Gwyneth told him that she got a little bit of help and then the Property Brothers appeared around the corner.

Later Gwyneth told the camera that it was a lot of pressure.

‘Especially for me because I am such a control freak,’ she said. ‘If someone did this to me, I would be panicking.’

Kevin was happy with the transformation of his condo.

‘It’s pretty fantastic that you did this for me,’ Kevin told Gwyneth. ‘She is like a sister to me.’

Gwyneth told the brothers that it was rare that a relationship that starts at work becomes this deep and that Kevin was her ‘angel, he’s my total guardian angel.’
