Courteney Cox directs pal Brandi Carlile’s music video for Right On Time

Courteney Cox directed six-time Grammy winner Brandi Carlile’s music video for Right On Time, which ‘resonated with her so deeply’ and premiered on Wednesday.

The video begins with the 40-year-old alt-country crooner walking backstage after finishing a concert unable to leave the venue due to unseen, self-imposed walls.

Throughout, Brandi wears a silver sequin ensemble, blue chiffon scarf, and sneakers selected by Maryam Malakpour, who also styles the 57-year-old Friends alum.

Hairstylist Pamela Neal coiffed Carlile’s blonde locks and make-up artist Loren Canby applied her blue eye shadow.

For the underwater sequences, the self-taught musician had to see a hypnotist and take swimming lessons in order to get over her phobia of putting her face in the pool.

The creative director for the complicated shoot was Brandi’s wife of eight years Catherine Shepherd, with whom she raises daughters Evangeline and Elijah.

Right On Time is the first single off Carlile’s seventh studio album In These Silent Days, which drops October 1.

The Washington State native first slid into Courteney’s Instagram DMs in February 2020 after hearing her piano cover of her 2017 track The Joke, and now they’re good friends.

Cox previously is no stranger to directing having helmed Lifetime movie TalhotBlond in 2012 and the dismally-reviewed 2014 dramedy Just Before I Go.

The Alabama-born beauty also directed Foy Vance’s 2019 music video for The Strong Hand, the 2008 short The Monday Before Thanksgiving, and 12 episodes of her sitcom Cougar Town.

Ironically, it was a music video that launched Courteney’s career – Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 hit Dancing In the Dark

‘I guess it’s full circle because now I would dance in front of anybody. I was so shy back then, and I really did not want to get up on stage,’ Cox told EW on Wednesday.

‘I almost died, and that’s probably why they wanted me to because I would give that reaction of, “No, don’t pick me.” But I love music, almost more than I love anything.

‘I wish I started when I was younger and really did something with it because it’s my favorite thing. It’s the one thing that makes me happy even when I’m sad, or it makes me sad even when I’m happy.’

Brian De Palma directed the clip shot over three days at the Saint Paul Civic Center in Minnesota during the 71-year-old rocker’s Born in the U.S.A. Tour.
