The current version of Batgirl has been in development ever since 2017 when Joss Whedon signed on to write and direct a flick centered around the character.

The embattled producer exited the project the following year, leaving it without a central figure.

In 2019, Christina Hodson, who also worked on the DC Comics-based productions Birds Of Prey and The Flash, was brought on to pen the feature’s script.

Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah signed on to helm the movie this past May.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Leslie Grace, who is known for her work in the musical film In The Heights, had landed the film’s main role as its titular character.

The performer’s audition impressed the project’s producers, who had considered Zoey Deutch, Haley Lu Richardson and Isabela Merced for the role.

Although Batgirl is expected to make its premiere in 2022, it has not been given a set release date as of yet.
