Selena Gomez signs on to star in new psychological thriller Spiral while also starting up a new mental health initiative

Selena Gomez has had quite the busy Thursday, with a new movie being announced while also launching a mental health initiative.

The 28-year-old actress signed on to star in a new thriller entitled Spiral, which Drake is executive producing, according to Deadline.

She also announced, through her Rare Beauty company, a campaign called Mental Health 101 for anyone struggling with Mental Health issues.

Gomez’s new film Spiral follows a former influencer whose addiction to social media is causing her body to literally fall apart.

Petra Collins will direct the film, making her directing debut, from a script that was most recently written by Phoebe Fisher, with Collins and Melissa Broder writing an earlier draft.

Drake will executive produce with Future the Prince, with Matthew Budman & Sumaiya Kaveh producing through their Forest Hill Entertainment.

As far as her new mental health initiative, Gomez revealed in a statement that she knows first-hand how these issues can affect someone.

‘I know first hand how scary and lonely it can feel to face anxiety and depression by yourself at a young age,’ Gomez said in a statement.

‘The world needs to know that mental health matters. It’s just as important as your physical health, and I wish we could all acknowledge that, not just in words but through our actions,’ she added.

The Mental Health 101 initiative is run through Gomez’s Rare Beauty company, aims to help people get, ‘connected to the resources they need, and to empower young people in ways that may not have been possible before.’

The initiative aims to get, ‘more mental health in education, empowers our community, and encourages financial support for more mental health services in educational settings.’

Fans can help by signing a petition to call on, ‘the philanthropy community to support mental health services in school’ or by donating to the Rare Impact Fund, with Rare Beauty matching donations up to $200,000.

Gomez has a number of other acting projects lined up, including returning as Mavis in Hotel Transylvania: Transformania.

She also returns to the small screen with her role in the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, about a trio of web sleuths obsessed with true crime who become wrapped up in a crime themselves.

She is also attached to star in the upcoming drama In the Shadow of the Mountain.
