CORONAVIRUS SEES UK INTERNET USAGE ALMOST DOUBLE

Data from Openreach, the UK’s largest which owns and operates most of the UK’s phone broadband lines, reveals daytime data consumption has almost doubled in March.

On March 9, one week before Boris Johnson gave his first daily coronavirus press conference urging people to work from home wherever possible, the total amount of data used between 9am and 5pm was 27 petabytes.

On Monday March 30, this figure reached 51Pb, almost double the previous figure. One petabyte is the same as one million gigabytes.

The peak time during the day continues to be between 2pm and 5pm, while the evening peak is between 8pm and 11pm.

There had only been seven problems the week before.

Saturday night’s usually see a spike in internet usage in households with people streaming movies and playing games consoles.

The coronavirus lockdown has put further strain on internet providers because with people stuck at home there is a greater demand for wifi.

Virgin Media customers took to Twitter to voice their frustrations.

Leo Young said: ‘@virginmedia you pointed out you resolved the issue but everyone is still getting disconnections, issues and more. Please reply for more information on the issue.’

Aaron Lecoutre said: ‘can you explain why your internet has been almost useless for 2 months? No other company has had the same problems as you have.’

While Gemma McLean said: ‘STILL having issues!!! @virginmedia is the most expensive provider SORT IT OUT! Are you going to be cutting our bills considering I have used more data on my phone this month than Wifi?! Absolute joke of a company atm!’
