Love Island’s Malin Andersson delights in the show’s cancellation

Love Island star Malin Andersson has rejoiced in the cancellation of the reality show, after it was revealed the programme has been taken off air due to coronavirus. 

Taking to Twitter in the wake of the news on Monday, the star, 27, admitted she was ‘so glad’ to hear the news, however her proclamation led to a number of critics claiming the show ‘made her’ and she should be grateful. 

Despite this, she highlighted the negatives of the ITV2 programme, including trolling, mental health challenges and the suicides of the shows host Caroline Flack and former stars of the show – Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis. 

ITV bosses pulled the plug on the summer series of the reality show, revealing it was a logistical impossibility to safeguard ‘the wellbeing of everyone involved’ amid the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.

Fans have been assured the dating programme, which was due to begin filming in June, will be back ‘stronger than ever in 2021’.

Kevin Lygo, Director of Television at ITV, said: ‘We have tried every which way to make Love Island this summer but logistically it’s just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that is the priority.’

While many fans were saddened by the news, Malin was clearly overjoyed as she took to Twitter to pen: ‘Haha Love Island is cancelled. So glad.’

One follower penned: ‘I am.a little confused, it gave you your blue tick , followers, platform to do good and money’, much to others’ chagrin. 

Another jumped to her defense, writing: ‘It also gave her trolling, friends associated with the show who took their own lives, and mental health issues with a lack of support’, to which Malin simply responded: ‘100%’.

Malin has been incredibly vocal in her criticism of the show, which propelled her to fame in 2016, alongside tragic Sophie who died in 2018. 

Mike starred on the show in 2018 and took his life the following year, while host Caroline died from suicide in February – leading to mass criticism of the show for its like of after-care and vigilance around its contestants’ mental health. 

Last week, Malin claimed that reality TV causes mental health problems as she discusses being trolled online. She that she is now vehemently against reality shows as they pose a danger to young people across the country.

Malin said she has seen people change after going through the experience. Writing for OK!, she said: ‘There are so many Love Islanders now and they’re all trying to be different to each other but they’re not going to get anywhere with it.
