Friends have paid tribute to a 20-year-old ‘gentle giant’ after he died of a suspected drug overdose at an illegal rave attended by around 2,000 people.

Thousands descended on Daisy Nook Country Park, Oldham on June 13, in the biggest of three illegal ‘lockdown raves’ held that weekend.

Joe Robinson, 20, collapsed and died the following day of a suspected drug overdose, Greater Manchester Police said at the time.

Last week friends set up a GoFundMe page in Joe’s memory, which has so far raised more than £6,000. 

In a tribute to the ‘gentle giant’, friends wrote: ‘The family have unexpectedly lost their son and brother and this page is her to help with the funeral costs.

‘Joe was a loved son, brother and friend and was adored by all. 

‘Joe treated everyone as family and would do anything for anyone.

‘The room lit up when he entered and smiles were brought to everyone’s face. 

‘He simply didn’t have a bad bone in his body. Joe was the gentle giant.

‘Rest in peace Joe, Fly High.’

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester South Coroner’s Court has received a file on the case. 

A file on the case has been sent to Manchester South Coroner’s Court in Stockport.

A spokesperson for the Coroner’s Office said: ‘At this time I can confirm we have received notification and the Coroner is undertaking initial enquiries.’

On Saturday Greater Manchester Police announced they had arrested a man on suspicion of public nuisance and criminal damage in relation to the rave in Oldham.

It was one of three illegal raves to take place over the course of the weekend of June 13.

A total of 6,000 people were thought to have attended raves in Oldham, Carrington and Leeds, during which an 18-year-old woman was reportedly raped and three men were stabbed.

Speaking in relation to the raves in Oldham and Carrington, GMP Detective Inspector Julian Scarsbrook said: ‘We have established a dedicated policing operation and are working alongside our partners to gather intelligence and protect our communities – this operation remains ongoing.

‘We have now arrested two individuals in connection with this illegal rave in Carrington, and we remain committed to investigating all lines of enquiry available to us as we identify and pursue anyone involved in the organisation of illegal raves.’
