In Finland, 22 new coronavirus infections have been reported during the day, says the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). A total of 7,554 infections have now been identified.

The majority of infections have been detected in Uusimaa, a total of 5,504 infections. Of the cities, Helsinki has the highest number of infections, with 2,815 infections. The second highest number of infections is in Vantaa (927) and the third highest in Espoo (867).

223 infections have been diagnosed in Turku and 142 in Tampere.

On Thursday, THL reported 20 new coronavirus infections detected during the day.

Infections have been on the rise in Finland over the last two weeks. At a press conference held by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (STM) and THL on Thursday morning, Liisa-Maria Voipio-Pulkki, STM’s Director of Strategy, said that the R-number describing the number of infections with the virus had risen to more than one. This indicates that the epidemic is in an accelerating phase.

The number of infections has almost doubled in the last seven days of follow-up compared to the previous one-week period.

THL reports the number of hospitalized and coronavirus-related deaths later in the afternoon.

The story has been fixed at 12.06. Yesterday, THL reported 20 new infections, not 22, as we incorrectly reported earlier.
