New Mutants is reportedly STILL set to be released in theaters this month

While Disney has been pushing most of its movies since a vast majority of theaters across North America remain closed due to COVID-19, the studio is apparently still planning on releasing New Mutants in theaters in just two weeks.

Disney had set an August 28 release date back in May, though while the studio has either pushed its movies into 2021 or slated them for release on the Disney Plus streaming service, a new report from Variety reveals a theatrical release is still happening on that date, despite most theaters remaining closed.

The report reveals that Disney sent out an email to theater chains outlining a detailed release plan, which revealed they could start selling tickets on August 18.

Newcomer Solstice Studios will release their film Unhinged on August 21, starring Russell Crowe, with several other films from indie studios opening in theaters soon.

ComScore reports that just 1,309 theaters have opened in the United States, out of 6,021 total venues.

Movie theaters in the two largest markets in the country, Los Angeles and New York have still not opened and there is no word on when they may re-open.

While many fans and analysts expected the movie to be shunted to Disney Plus or the Disney-owned Hulu, director Josh Boone explained in July why it’s still arriving in theaters, in a new interview with Collider.
