Kate Garraway is visibly moved after being branded ‘incredible’ by soldier

Kate Garraway was lost for words during Friday’s Good Morning Britain after being lauded for her resilence amid her husband Derek Draper’s Covid battle.

The presenter, 53, who has spoken openly about her husband’s health struggles, gushed it was ‘so kind’ of Sergeant Brian Wood after he branded her an ‘incredible woman.’

It comes after Kate revealed that her husband Derek is still unable to speak after being brought home from hospital to continue his recovery from coronavirus.

Sergeant Wood was a guest on GMB to discuss his involvement in the BBC drama Danny Boy, which comes in the wake of a public inquiry into accusations of prisoner mistreatment by the British Army in Iraq.

Wood himself was accused of war crimes after serving overseas, but in 2017 the Iraq Historic Abuse Team (IHAT) was shut down.

During his interview, which comes ahead of Danny Boy’s broadcast, Wood praised presenter Kate for maintaining such a positive outlook in the wake of Derek’s lengthy Covid battle.

Stating he’d be buying a copy of her book The Power Of Hope, he said: ‘Kate epitomises ”Keep Attacking”. Keep attacking has a very subliminal meaning. It is one that is very unique to the individual.

‘So if you want to be the best in your arena, whether it be sport, business, then you’ve got to go an earn that. If you’re going through some challenging times, you have to show up each day.

‘You have to take that step forward and attack the day the best you can. We launched it from what we had gone through to try and inspire others to grow and stay positive and look forward. And you know what, it went supersonic.

‘We all go through it and as I said what an ambassador Kate is.’

It has been confirmed that Derek is Britain’s longest surviving Covid hospital patient after he was first admitted with breathing difficulties on March 30 last year.

He was put on a ventilator and spent months in a form of coma before uttering his first word – ‘pain’ – in October last year.

The father-of-two’s body has been ‘universally affected’ by the condition, which means that it targeted his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas.

Lobbyist Derek spent more than a year in intensive care but returned to the couple’s home in north London on April 7 and burst into tears when he saw his kids.

A long way to go: She said: ‘He isn’t really able to speak at the moment so he can’t tell him off, I have to be the bad guy! They are besides themselves to have him home. They are my heroes’

Kate revealed earlier this week that Derek is still struggling to speak since returning home from hospital, but praised her children for knowing how to interact with him.

She explained on BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday: ‘He isn’t really able to speak at the moment so he can’t tell them off, I have to be the bad guy!

Kate praised her ‘heroic’ children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, for knowing ‘how to communicate’ with their father throughout his recovery.

The broadcaster added: ‘They know instinctively how to talk to him but not ask too much from him. In a way that grownups want to see the old Derek, they have an instinct, there is a lot of love there.’
