The indoor ceremony and live show will form part of the Government’s scientific Events Research Programme, and it will use enhanced testing approaches to examine how events can take place without the need for social distancing after all restrictions are lifted on June 21.

Working closely with the Government to adhere to safety guidelines, this means The BRITs, will be the first live music show at The O2 in over a year, with 4,000 tickets being up for grabs- just one fifth of the venue’s 20,000 capacity.

The BRITs will play an important role in paving the way for the return of live music at scale as the UK emerges from the past year’s restrictions.

How are the BRIT Awards going ahead during the Covid pandemic?

The 2021 BRIT Awards mark the first live music event in the UK since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The indoor ceremony and live show will form part of the Government’s scientific Events Research Programme.

Enhanced testing approaches will examine how events can take place without the need for social distancing after all restrictions are lifted on June 21.

4,000 tickets were made available for the live ceremony, just one fifth of the venue’s 20,000 capacity, with 2,500 of those being given to key workers.

The BRITs will play an important role in paving the way for the return of live music at scale as the UK emerges from the past year’s restrictions.

Audience members will not be socially distanced or required to wear face coverings once seated inside the arena, though they will be required in communal areas such as the toilet or main concourse.

All attendees will be allowed to purchase alcohol and concessions once inside the O2 Arena.

Attendees will also be required to follow existing Government guidance when travelling to the venue and adhere to rules set out by the event organisers.

Among the rules, attendees must have proof of a negative lateral flow test result to enter the venue, and said test must be taken at an asymptomatic testing site within 36 hours of the ceremony.

Upon arrival at the venue, all attendess will be asked to take a PCR test, and will then take another test five days after the ceremony

It’s hoped this will gather further evidence on the safety of indoor settings, reduced social distancing and the removal of non-pharmaceutical interventions like face coverings.

To reward key workers who have worked tirelessly in the pandemic, bosses are releasing 2,500 free tickets via ballot, which opens on brits.co.uk on Thursday at 12pm.

As part of the wider scientific research on the trial events, attendees will also be asked to take a test after the event to gather further evidence on the safety of indoor settings, reduced social distancing and the removal of non-pharmaceutical interventions like face coverings.

Speaking about the news, Dua, 25, who will be performing on the night, said: ‘This has been a long tough year for everyone and I’m delighted the night will honour the key worker heroes who have cared for us so well during that time and continue to do so. They are quite simply an inspiration.

‘The BRIT Awards are always special and this will truly make it a night to remember.’

The Don’t Start Now hitmaker recently hinted at what fans can expect from her eagerly-awaited performance, though she wasn’t willing to give too much away.

Appearing on BBC Radio 2 this week, she spilled: ‘The theme is London. It’s a little bit of a taste of everything. I am really rubbish at talking in code so I will stop there before I make a mess of it.’

Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive BPI & BRIT Awards, added: ‘This year’s BRIT Awards with Mastercard is one of the most significant in the show’s history.

‘Not only will we be celebrating the brilliant music and artists that have helped us through the pandemic, but we hope it will provide a path for the return of live music that fans and artists have so sorely missed.

‘And as a thank you to the key workers who have kept our country going through the difficult times, we are inviting them to be our audience for the first live performances at The O2 in over a year.

‘We’re buzzing about the show and working closely with Government, The O2 and all our partners to ensure all safety measures and guidelines are adhered to.’

Dance & electronic acts 220 Kid, Nathan Dawes and Regard also get a look in this shortlist, as does Harry Styles, whose performance at the 2020 show was one of the evening’s highlights.

The international categories see new and returning artists alike; nominated for their first ever BRIT in International Group are BTS, Run the Jewels and Fontaines D.C., alongside Foo Fighters, who have won this category four times previously and Haim, who have been nominated twice before.

International Female as ever showcases incredibly multi-talented and creative women, with Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift all shortlisted – Miley receives her debut BRIT nomination this year.

The BRITs welcomes The Weeknd into the category for this year’s International Male, having been nominated twice before, plus Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, Burna Boy (who appeared at the 2020 BRITs as part of Stormzy’s performance) and Bruce Springsteen, marking his 11th BRIT nomination.

Earlier this month, The BRITs announced the winner of this year’s Rising Star supported by BBC Radio 1 award as Griff, who joins an illustrious list of artist alumni such as Adele, Florence + The Machine, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding and Celeste who were all identified through this award (previously known as Critics’ Choice) as the future stars of British music.
