An explosive device has been thrown at a crowd of protesters during rival pro-Israel and pro-Palestine marches, detonating in New York City with a bright flash. 

The device is thought to be a smoke bomb, a NYPD spokesman told DailyMail.com.

He said there were minor injuries, which he believed to be burns.

The device was thrown at protesters in the Diamond District of Manhattan on Thursday evening.
