Ricky Gervais left in agony after tweaking an existing back pain while tying his shoelace

He’s normally known for his chirpy nature and good sense of humour.

But Ricky Gervais was not in a laughing mood on Monday as he revealed to his fans that he is suffering from serious back pain after tweaking an existing problem.

The 60-year-old comic held a Twitter Live session in which he revealed he had been trying to tie his shoelace when his back started causing him grief.

‘Get me a f*****g ambulance!’ Ricky Gervais has revealed he was left in agony after tweaking his back while tying his shoelace – leaving him needing partner Jane to help him dress

During the live session, Ricky said: ‘I’m in a bad way, went for a run at four, tied my shoe up and my back went, agony.

‘Couldn’t walk, took me ages, I had only made it to the end of the street.

‘It’s that thing when you are in agony and you can’t walk but you don’t want to look weird to anyone.

‘I wanted to lie down and scream, “Get me a f*****g ambulance”.’

Ricky then said he managed to make it back to his house where he told his long-term girlfriend Jane that he had injured his back again.

He said: ‘I made it back, laid on the floor, took some naproxen which we have always got because the last time my back went that helped me relax it.

‘It gets to five and I’m still in my workout gear.

‘Jane helps me get undressed, get into the shower, then getting dressed. Even with two of us, getting dressed was a bit of a chore.’

Helping hand: Ricky also said that the pain he felt in his back was so extreme that he needed the help of his long-term partner Jane to change his clothes (pictured together in 2018)

Reflecting on the repercussions of his injury, Ricky said: ‘I’ve got tennis booked tomorrow, that’s got to be f***ing cancelled. Thank f**k I haven’t got a gig.

‘Next tour after this one I’m doing it sitting down. I’m changing the genre, it’s not stand up, it’s f***ing sit down.’

His injury comes after Ricky joked he still can’t name any funny women as he roasted Miranda Hart in a warm up gig for this new comedy show.

The Office creator claimed the only female comics he found funny were Dame Edna Everage and Eddie Izzard, The Sun reports.

Dame Edna is the on stage alter ego of the male comedian Barry Humphries, 87, and Eddie, 59, announced she is gender fluid in December.

Taking to the stage for his latest performance, outspoken Ricky said: ‘What about all funny female comedians?

‘In real life I know there are loads of funny women. Like, um. No, but there are… Dame Edna Everage.

‘Eddie Izzard. She’s funny. She’s not only a great comedienne she’s also a great actress. He was, she was brilliant as that man in that thing,’ he quipped.

Ricky, who later insisted he was joking with his scathing set, then took a pop at Miranda Hart as he said he’d been trolled online by a person who questioned whether he was actually a comedian.

He explained: ‘I got this tweet: ‘Call yourself a comedian?’ He knows I do. It literally says it in my Twitter bio.

Ricky then insinuated that being compared to Miranda Hart would be a fatal insult as he continued the savage set.

Remembering the online heckle, Ricky recites: ”You’re about as funny as…’ – I thought he was going to go for the jugular and say ‘Miranda’!’
