He described the group as ‘completely brainless’. He said he is clearing away the debris himself.

Mr Scott, 68, said he believes the party involved two families with children who arrived in separate cars before walking to the nature reserve.

He said: ‘They proceeded up the path to find a lovely, secluded spot of unspoilt landscape.

‘They were all together having a jolly. They were probably families from different households and the adults were in their 30s and 40s. Both families had children who were running around shouting.

‘It was four hours of mayhem. A large fire was left burning and the whole area was strewn with rubbish. There were loads of empty cans and two empty vodka bottles and there were plastic bags discarded everywhere.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader Abi Brown has condemned the behaviour. She said: 'It's hard to believe people could act so recklessly at this time. Not only have they not followed the guidance, but they have put additional pressure onto hard-pressed council staff who are working really hard to keep essential services going'

‘The people who left all this mess during the alleged lockdown are completely brainless. There is no chance the council is cleaning this mess up because the area is off the beaten track. I don’t know about lockdown – I’d prefer to lock them up.’
