  • Perspex bubbles will be used to maintain social distancing by some restaurants
  • The Barn restaurant, near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, have installed the pods
  • Chef Josh Green has spent £12,000 on the bubbles, which hold 48 diners in total
  • The pods could help eateries as coronavirus lockdown restriction ease on July 4

They’re a godsend for foodies who have been craving a meal out during lockdown – and certainly make for dinner with a view.

Now, these futuristic dining pods may be the invention that saves the struggling restaurant industry after restrictions are eased on July 4.

The perspex dining bubbles – seen here in the grounds of The Barn restaurant near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire – will help ensure diners maintain social distancing rules.

Each one sits up to six people and is said to be weatherproof – apparently able to withstand 60mph winds.

Similar structures have been seen in New York, but now the pods are being adopted by restaurants across Britain in preparation for an onslaught of hungry guests once doors open.

Chef Josh Green, who runs The Barn, has spent £12,000 on the pods – which can cope with a total of 48 diners, rather than the 96 limit he had in place before the lockdown in March.

In a positive turn of events, his diary is now crammed with bookings throughout the summer.

Mr Green said: ‘If people are worried about coming out again, they’re in their own little bubble,’ adding that he intends to keep the pods outside, even after the pandemic passes.
