Middle-aged man fights for his life after being stabbed in the middle of Oxford Street before passers-by grab suspect and police make arrest

  • Victim rushed to central London hospital following stabbing on Oxford Street 
  • Police arrested 25-year-old who was detained by the horrified public at scene 
  • Footage posted to social media shows a large cordon still in place tonight


A ‘middle-aged’ man is tonight fighting for his life in hospital after he was stabbed in the middle of Oxford Street.  

The victim was rushed to a central London hospital after sustaining knife injuries at the junction of Regent Street at 8pm. He remains in a critical condition. 

Metropolitan Police arrested a 25-year-old man at the scene after he was detained by members of the public who were nearby during the daylight stabbing. 

The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury, which is not believed to be life-threatening.  

Footage posted to social media shows a large cordon in place on Oxford Street.

A Met spokesman said: ‘Police were called shortly before 20:00hrs on Thursday, 1 July to reports of a man stabbed on Oxford Circus, close to Regent Street, W1.

‘Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. 

‘The victim was taken to a central London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.  A crime scene is in place and officers remain in the area.’

Several horrified shoppers took to Twitter following the stabbing to describe the scene, with one writing: ‘Wrong time to be walking down Oxford Street.’

Another said: ‘Oxford Circus locked off due to stabbing.

‘A middle aged gentleman who just got stabbed in Oxford Street looks ok. Hopefully he fully recovers.’
