Emergency teams race to the scene following a ‘stabbing’ in Woolwich in front of hundreds of members of the public

  • Police and paramedics raced to Woolwich New Road in East London this evening
  • Reports on social media suggest man was stabbed and airlifted to hospital 
  • Officers at scene and roads have been closed off as investigations continue

Emergency services raced to the scene in Woolwich today following reports of a ‘stabbing’. 

Paramedics, multiple police vehicles and an air ambulance rushed to the scene on Woolwich New Road, south east London, this evening in front of hundreds of members of the public. 

Multiple reports on social media suggest a man was stabbed and was airlifted to hospital. 

Police have now closed off the road and drivers have been warned to avoid the area as the force carry out their investigations.

A police spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Officers are at the scene of a fatal stabbing on Woolwich New Road. A crime scene remains in place. 

‘At this early stage there have been no arrests.’

On Twitter, one witness wrote: ‘Stabbing in Woolwich. Police everywhere. Two ambulances and air ambulance attending so far.’

Another person added: ‘Reported stabbing in Woolwich. Armed police & air ambulance in attendance #woolwich.’  

A nearby Tesco has also asked shoppers to leave and officers are currently barring the entrance, My London reports.

According to My London, officers at the scene were also heard telling members of the public: ‘Please leave the area, allow us to do what we need to do to save this man’s life’.
