Italian restaurant is criticised for ‘sexist’ call handler job ad asking for ‘girls only’ because men ‘can’t do it properly’

  • Love Italian takeaway in Hessle, near Hull, advertised for two ‘girl’ telephonists
  • But shop window job post provoked backlash and claims restaurant was ‘sexist’
  • The eatery’s manager responded by saying ‘a man can’t do the job’

A takeaway has been accused of sexism after placing an advert in their window to hire two ‘girls’ to take phone calls.

The advert was stuck up at the Love Italian takeaway in Hessle, near Hull to fill their vacancies for ‘telephonists’ to work evenings.

However, people were taken aback by the ‘dodgy’ job posting which read: ‘Telephonist wanted. Two girls needed. 5-9. Apply within.’

A picture of the ad was left on The Original Hessle Moan and Rant Facebook page, questioning the ‘unprofessional’ nature of the advert.

He said: ‘We only need the girls on the phone. It is not something about being dodgy (it’s) because a man cannot do this job and that’s why we are asking for girls.

‘We tried before and they didn’t turn up for work and wouldn’t answer their phone. It’s happened a few times before.’

The restaurant has a three-star rating on TripAdvisor.

A description on Love Italian’s website simply says: ‘We are constantly striving to improve our service and quality in order to give our customers the very best experience.’
